چکیده
Micrometer-sized magnetic wires are used to study the mechanical properties of human mucus collected after surgery. Our work shows that has property a high viscosity gel characterized by large spatial viscoelastic heterogeneities.

Active Microrheology of Intestinal Mucus in the Larval Zebrafish
Mucus is a complex biological fluid that plays a variety of functional roles in many physiological systems. Intestinal mucus in particular serves as a physical barrier to pathogens, a medium for the diffusion of nutrients and metabolites, and an environmental home for colonizing microbes. Its rheological properties have therefore been the subject of many investigations, thus far limited, howeve...
متن کاملActive microrheology determines scale-dependent material properties of Chaetopterus mucus
We characterize the lengthscale-dependent rheological properties of mucus from the ubiquitous Chaetopterus marine worm. We use optically trapped probes (2-10 μm) to induce microscopic strains and measure the stress response as a function of oscillation amplitude. Our results show that viscoelastic properties are highly dependent on strain scale (l), indicating three distinct lengthscale-depende...
متن کاملA foam model highlights the differences of the macro- and microrheology of respiratory horse mucus.
Native horse mucus is characterized with micro- and macrorheology and compared to hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) gel as a model. Both systems show comparable viscoelastic properties on the microscale and for the HEC the macrorheology is in good agreement with the microrheology. For the mucus, the viscoelastic moduli on the macroscale are several orders of magnitude larger than on the microscale. L...
متن کاملActive microrheology of Chaetopterus mucus determines three intrinsic lengthscales that govern material properties
We characterize the scale-dependent rheological properties of mucus from the Chaetopterus sea annelid and determine the intrinsic lengthscales controlling distinct rheological and structural regimes. The mucus produced by this ubiquitous filter feeder serves a host of roles including filtration, protection and trapping nutrients. The ease of clean mucus extraction coupled with similarities to h...
متن کاملTranscriptional Response of Mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa to Human Respiratory Mucus
UNLABELLED Adaptation of bacterial pathogens to a host can lead to the selection and accumulation of specific mutations in their genomes with profound effects on the overall physiology and virulence of the organisms. The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is capable of colonizing the respiratory tract of individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), where it undergoes evolution to optimize ...
